I'm curious about this also: how many miles are on the 87? Did it get subjected to a lot of highway miles?
I remember reading on rec.motorcycles about one Savage owner who noticed she seemed to be very low on oil. Not being very mechanically inclined, rather than top it up immediately she decided to get a service done by the local shop - after a road trip. She then rode the bike several hundred miles on the Interstate.
By the time she took it into the shop the engine was belching out a lot of smoke and required a new top end.
